Three days after Tyson Foods notified customers and producers of its plans to follow the intent of a new mandatory country-of-origin labeling law, competitor Cargill Meat Solutions followed suit.

The Wichita, Kan.-based company said Friday it has begun transitioning its beef and pork programs to label products as a “Product of the USA” and “Product of USA, Canada, Mexico,” and expects at least 70 percent of product to meet the “Product of the USA,” or Category A, labeling standard beginning Jan. 1.

Both Tyson and Cargill reportedly had previously stated intentions to mitigate the costs of segregating livestock and products by labeling all of them, including those born, raised and harvested in the United States, as multi-country, or Category B.

“All our customers had indicated they wanted Label B,” Cargill spokeswoman Rebecca Hayne told Meatingplace.com.

However, USDA, citing the law’s purpose to provide consumers with a clear choice partly by labeling U.S.-born-raised-and-harvested animals as Category A, moved to close the so-called “loophole.”

Cargill executives said the transition will be accomplished efficiently by partnering with producers to ensure that animals with common characteristics are delivered to processing plants in groups, and by working closely with its retail, foodservice and export customers.

“We anticipate that we will need to make some shifts in the way we operate our plants, probably designating different delivery windows for different types of animals,” Cargill Beef President John Keating said in a statement.

JBS S.A. led declines last week on the Brazilian stock exchange, which was headed for the worst week this decade on fears the credit crisis will stunt economic expansion and a global recession would dull demand for raw materials, Bloomberg reported.

On Friday, JBS dropped 24 percent on concern that the credit crunch will increase the cost of servicing debt from recent acquisitions.

“This company is very much affected by this crisis due to the huge debt they have after purchases,” Dennis Messer, an analyst with Brascan Corretora, was quoted as saying. “The industry as a whole also is falling due to this liquidity crisis.”

Competing Brazilian beef producers Marfrig Frigorificos e Comercio de Alimentos S.A. fell 14 percent, and Minerva S.A. dipped 2.1 percent.

By: Kelly Purden

We install programs and visit all kinds of websites everyday. Our system files fragment themselves and we tend to forget to do a regular troubleshoot scan. With all these going on, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if you encounter a slow startup with your Windows XP. Once you notice that it takes more than five minutes for your computer to start running, there may be a problem with your computer system. A slow startup with Windows XP can be solved instantly though, and through these solutions you’ll have it running again in no time.

The first thing you should consider is that you system undergoes all kinds of processes. You install all kinds of new programs, not knowing that there are actually other small applications that are installed as well. These usually come in the form of extra applications from publishers that go with your new program or toolbars and other stuff that installs itself instantly or when you forget to uncheck the radio button. This can cause a slow startup for your Windows XP, minor as the issue may sound, so you should either try to do a disk cleanup by clicking on the Disk Cleanup tool or manually browse through your program list and uninstall those that are just sitting there unused and forgotten about.

Another solution you could try is by defragmenting your file system. Files get fragmented into clusters all the time, making it difficult for your computer to scan and function well. Though it may take some time to finish, your system may start running faster than before after defragmenting it. You can also try exiting autostart programs and disconnecting unused network connections to improve your slow computer. Autostart programs are usually activated upon startup of your computer and can eat up a lot of CPU space. Try browsing through your Task Manager, look for programs that you don’t need to use, and end their processes. That way, more disk space will be freed and the system can run a little faster than before. Disconnecting unused network connections with other computers can also help. Usually if your network connection is shared with one or more computers, the performance level of your computer goes down. If you don’t see the need to read and write files into other people’s computers, you can shut these down to get rid of a slow startup with your Windows XP.

If none of these solutions seem to work, then you may have to troubleshoot your system for a virus attack, which is one of the most significant reasons why your system is slowing down. After scanning, try restarting your computer and see how long it would take for the system to finish. This is a good way in knowing if any changes have been made. You may have to backup your files first in case you have to reformat or perform serious action with your computer. To backup your files is not overreacting; anything can happen now that new and improved viruses are spreading all over the Internet. A slow startup with Windows XP could result to a lot of difficulties, so make sure to check once in a while.

Philadelphia attorney has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission. Philip J. Berg, the filing attorney is seeks an injunction preventing the senator from continuing his candidacy and a court order enjoining the DNC from nominating Sen. Obama, claiming he is constitutionally ineligible to run for the office of President of the United States.

The lawsuit maintained that Sen. Obama is not a natural born U.S. citizen and lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia. Berg is citing the senator’s use of a birth certificate from the state of Hawaii verified as a forgery by independent document forensic experts. Berg also states that he possesses copies of Sen. Obama’s registration to Fransiskus Assisi School In Jakarta, Indonesia which clearly show that he was registered under the name “Barry Soetoro” and his citizenship listed as Indonesian.

By: Victor Epand

You may not have thought about it, but when you get a vacuum sealer, your meats will probably stay fresher longer. Why does this happen? What should I know about these vacuum sealers? These are questions that you may be asking yourself right now.

Many people want to keep their meats tasting good and staying fresh for as long as they can. They may just have trouble realizing how to do that and what the best products are for that purpose. With the rising prices of meat nowadays, people are looking for the best solution to this issue and a vacuum sealer may just be the answer.

Vacuum sealers take the air out of the bag that your meat is stored in, so that the meat stays good and you don’t have a problem with frostbite. Many people don’t realize it, but the meat that you decide to put in your fridge will get frostbite if you have any kind of air in the container that it’s in. This may mean that your high priced meats will not taste right at the time that you want to serve them. This might just ruin your party as well as your day.

You also want to have your meats in a vacuum sealed bag so that you do not have to worry about the meat getting gross and old before it’s time. This may be the main reason that you got the sealer in the first place and why you are using it for your food products. You are probably going to have a better time with keeping your meats fresh and tasting good just because of the vacuum sealing that you may do to your meats.

There are many meats that can be sealed with a vacuum sealer, you just have to go looking in your freezer for them and get them in that nice little bag so that you can use them later on in the week or the month. You are the one that got that nifty little vacuum sealer and you should use it for the foods that you need to keep good - whether it’s meat or it’s other kinds of food that you may have. Take some time to learn about your machine, so that you can get the most out of it and so that you will be happy with it in the long run.

Brazil has voluntarily suspended exports of processed beef to the United States due to inadequacies in Brazil’s inspection system.

Laura Reiser, a spokeswoman for USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, told Meatingplace.com the move followed FSIS’s annual audit of Brazil’s inspection system.

“The FSIS auditors identified issues with record keeping in establishments, oversight of laboratories and previous corrective actions seemed to be de-emphasized,” she said.

FSIS continues to analyze the audit information. Meantime, Brazil must conduct its own assessments and corrective actions.

“FSIS will review the information Brazil provides, conduct follow-up audits then determine whether these exports can resume,” Reiser said.

As a safeguard to diseases such as foot-and-mouth, the United States limits imports of Brazilian beef to processed product.

Sen. Herbert Kohl (D-Wis.) sent a letter Tuesday to the Justice Department urging it to block the deals because it would give three U.S. beef packers more than 80 percent control of the market and reduce competition.

“By reducing the number of major buyers for ranchers’ cattle from five to three — and in some regions even one or two — this deal will give the remaining beef processors enormous buying power,” Kohl wrote. “With little choice to whom to sell their cattle, ranchers will increasingly be left in a ‘take it or leave it’ position.”

Kohl said that if the government opts to allow the JBS deals, it should at least force the company to divest Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding LLC, a part of the Smithfield package.

Kohl’s statement comes at the conclusion of his committee’s review of the pending transactions, which included a hearing in May.
The Justice Department has declined to comment on pending cases.

Washington, D.C. - The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) today reacted to the farce known as the Farm Bill. After President Bush vetoed the Farm Bill on Wednesday, the House moved to immediately override the veto, but it was discovered that the President did not receive the correct copy of the bill. Because of constitutional issues, the House and Senate will have to pass the full bill again an`d send it back to the President, possibly prolonging the process.

This delay affects the adoption of the fiscal year 2009 budget resolution because while the Farm Bill is within the fiscal year 2008 budget, it would generate a $2.9 billion deficit over 11 years under 2009 numbers, according to the Congressional Budget Office. This would violate the Senate’s pay-go, forcing them to cut spending or increase taxes to make up the shortfall. Congress doesn’t want to be forced to account for their bloated Farm Bill, so the budget will only be passed afterwards.

“This serves to further highlight the fraud that Congress is perpetrating on American taxpayers by passing the most farcical farm bill in history,” said CCAGW President Tom Schatz. “While Democratic leadership and Agriculture committee leaders try to claim that this Farm Bill includes reform, the vast majority of subsidies will continue to go to a small handful of the wealthiest farmers.”

The Farm Bill will dole out $5.2 billion annually in direct payments to individuals, many of whom are no longer farming, without regard to prices or income. It also creates a new “permanent disaster fund” costing $3.8 billion, money that will mostly go to the same wealthy farmers.

Another new subsidy created by the farm bill, the Average Crop Revenue Election, could end up authorizing $16 billion more in crop subsidies than previously projected. The new Farm Bill ties subsidy payments to current price levels which have reached record highs instead of a more moderate baseline. The Washington Post reported on May 21 that, “The Agriculture Department estimates that subsidy payments to corn farmers alone could reach $10 billion a year if prices—which have been $5 to $6 a bushel—were to drop to $3.25 a bushel, a level seen as recently as last year.”

“This has to rank as one of the worst farm bills in history and the irony is that it comes at a time that should have been ripe for reform,” concluded Schatz.

The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste is the lobbying arm of Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.

While I have supported farm bill legislation in the past, I opposed the 2008 farm bill.
This bill is a $289 billion bloatfest. In my opinion, both parties have forgotten the core values of fiscal responsibility and duty to the taxpayer when they voted this bill out of Congress.
When farm subsidies were introduced in the 1930s, Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace called them “a temporary solution to deal with an emergency.” That emergency was collapsing farm incomes affecting 25 percent of the population then living on farms.
Today, crop prices are soaring. Since the enactment of the 2002 farm bill, prices of the five crops (cotton, soybeans, corn, wheat and rice) that receive most of the farm subsidies have skyrocketed - some by more than 200 percent. Net farm income has more than doubled.
Yet the new farm bill expands the $25 billion farm-subsidy system by raising payment rates and creating new subsidies.
Who are the taxpayers subsidizing? Not the mom-and-pop family farmers struggling to stay on the land. These recipients are millionaires - commercial farmers who report an average income of $200,000 and a net worth of nearly $2 million.
President Bush proposed limiting farm subsidies to those earning less than $200,000 a year, but that was rejected. This farm bill even repeals key payment limits, allowing some farmers to collect millions in annual subsidies. According to one farm subsidy database, the top 10 subsidy recipients - living in the metropolises of San Francisco, Phoenix, Memphis and Fort Worth - took in from $700,000 to $1.2 million in federal crop subsidy payments between 2003 and 2005.
One reason crop prices - especially corn prices - are surging is our wrongheaded ethanol policy. Ethanol pulls up corn prices. We’ll be putting a third of our corn crop this year into ethanol - 90 million acres of agricultural land. Growing corn has never been so profitable.
Besides inflating food prices, corn-based ethanol doesn’t make sense as an energy policy either, because producing it takes more energy than it returns. Yet the new farm bill includes a 45-cent-per-gallon subsidy for ethanol from corn.
If we truly value using ethanol as a clean-burning fuel, why do we have trade barriers that prohibit us from importing cheap Brazilian sugarcane-based ethanol? This bill forces the U.S. Department of Agriculture to sell already overpriced, subsidized excess refined sugar in the marketplace into ethanol production.
USDA has estimated that ethanol from sugar is twice as expensive to produce and could cost taxpayers as much as $4 billion or more.
Under the pretense of meeting House pay-as-you-go budget enforcement rules, the farm bill is a sham. The Congressional Budget Office identified numerous gimmicks such as shifting costs outside the 10-year window and assuming that new nutrition and disaster-aid provisions will suddenly be dropped after five years to save money.
In addition, PAYGO was circumvented by using the farm spending baseline from 2007, which allows for more spending, rather than the 2008 figure.
The whole package reeks of back-room deals made to secure votes. No wonder the public is skeptical of what goes on in Washington, D.C. The 2008 farm bill is bad for taxpayers, bad for market-based agriculture, bad for grocery shoppers - and is seriously flawed public policy.
At a time of budget deficits and high food prices, a bipartisan effort could have - and should have - produced better.
